Jack Aubrey Cobb: The Founder of Quinlan Ag

Jack Aubrey Cobb (1926–2007) was a pioneering educator and decorated military officer whose 33-year career at Quinlan ISD laid the foundation for the district's renowned agricultural programs. His immense contributions to the school and community are honored through the naming of the Jack Cobb Vocational Agriculture Wing at Ford High School.

Educational Leadership and FFA Excellence

Hired by Superintendent W.H. Ford Jr. in 1948 to develop a brand-new agriculture program, Mr. Cobb became the bedrock of vocational education in Quinlan. He was known for his ability to mentor students toward local and state-level success.

  • The FFA Legacy: Under his leadership, the Quinlan FFA Chapter excelled in welding, public speaking, and parliamentary procedure. He mentored Allen Borden, who became a State FFA President, and coached numerous students to top honors at the State Fair of Texas and Hunt County Fair.
  • Resource Innovation: As Lake Tawakoni was developed, the State of Texas asked Mr. Cobb to lead a "Lake Resource" class, teaching students about marina management, boating safety, and fishing techniques.
  • Instructional Scope: Beyond traditional farming, his classes assisted the community with land measurement and livestock projects, providing practical skills to generations of Panthers.

A Life of Service and Valor

Mr. Cobb’s dedication to his country matched his commitment to his students:

  • Military Career: A World War II veteran drafted in 1946, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He later joined the Texas National Guard, eventually rising to the rank of Colonel.
  • Command Roles: He commanded Company B 3/144th Infantry and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis (1961–62). He later served as a battalion commander and a pilot in the Texas National Guard.
  • Academic Background: The valedictorian of the Dodd City High School Class of 1944, he earned his Bachelor’s from Sam Houston State University and his Master’s from East Texas State University.

Community Impact and Civic Leadership

Mr. Cobb’s influence was felt in nearly every corner of Quinlan’s civic life:

  • Public Office: He served as the Mayor of Quinlan and as the Board President of the Hunt Memorial Hospital District.
  • Civic Development: He was instrumental in obtaining the charter for the Quinlan State Bank and served as a director for the Lions Club, Little League, and the Boy Scouts.
  • Faith: A deacon at the First Baptist Church of Quinlan for 45 years, he also taught adult Sunday school.
  • Hall of Fame: In 2008, he was inducted into the QISD Hall of Fame for his life of service to his students, family, and country.

Personal Legacy

Mr. Cobb and his wife, Jacque Joyce, raised three daughters—Joy, Judy, and Jill—all of whom graduated from QISD and followed in his footsteps toward higher education. Both Joy and Jill continued his legacy by becoming teachers within Quinlan ISD. Joy served a lifetime career in the district, and still gives back tremendously to this day through the QISD Education Foundation, and more.

Mr. Cobb dedicated his life to the Quinlan community, QISD students, his family, and the United States of America.
