Our Namesake - Larry Johnson (Johnson Athletic Complex)

Larry Lynn Johnson: A Vision of Growth and Opportunity

Larry Lynn Johnson (1953–present) is a transformative figure in Quinlan ISD history, having served the district for a total of 21 years across two separate tenures. His leadership as Superintendent (1997–2008) sparked an era of unprecedented modernization and community-focused development, a legacy permanently honored through the naming of the Larry L. Johnson Athletic Complex.

Educational Leadership and Infrastructure

Mr. Johnson’s 37-year career in public education was marked by his ability to lead through "rough transition periods" and his vision for district-wide excellence. Under his guidance, QISD was recognized as one of only five school boards in 2002 to receive the "Texas State Honor Board" award out of over 1,080 districts.

  • The Multi-Purpose Vision: He oversaw the construction of the W.H. Ford High School, the Larry L. Johnson Multi-Purpose facility, and the A.E. Butler Intermediate School.
  • Athletic Advancement: His commitment to student-athletes led to the development of the Spring Sports Complex, which included new baseball and softball fields along with tennis courts.
  • Technological Innovation: He led the movement to modernize the district’s technology department, bringing it to a level described as "second to none" during his tenure.
  • Community Integration: Mr. Johnson was the driving force behind the creation of the QISD Education Center, now a part of the Family and Community Education Department, which offers community education classes, a fitness center, and a free adult community library.

Professional Journey

Raised in the "cotton fields of Northern Hunt County," Mr. Johnson’s career was a testament to his dedication to rural education:

  • Early QISD Years: He began his educational career in Quinlan in the fall of 1971, serving as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and finally as an assistant principal at the high school.
  • Bland ISD Tenure: He spent 16 years as the Superintendent of Bland ISD before being recruited back to his "first teaching school" in 1997 to lead Quinlan through a pivotal period of growth.
  • Advocacy: He served as a past president of the Texas Association of Community Schools (TACS), one of the largest lobbying organizations for small and mid-sized school districts in the state.

Philanthropy and the Education Foundation

Mr. Johnson’s impact extended beyond administrative policy to direct financial support for students:

  • QISD Education Foundation: He was instrumental in founding the QISD Education Foundation, soliciting thousands of dollars from vendors to support educational grants. Since 2005, the Foundation has awarded approximately $1,000,000 to teachers and students of Quinlan ISD.
  • Personal Generosity: Larry and his wife, Cheryl, provided significant personal financial donations to ensure the Foundation’s long-term success.
  • Retirement Legacy: Upon his retirement in May 2008, the community was encouraged to make donations to the Education Foundation in his honor in lieu of flowers or gifts.

"I would not be where I am without the guidance and support of Larry Johnson." — Bryan Clark, Bland ISD Superintendent
